The museum’s paintings collection includes nearly 4,000 works, with a primary focus on American artists—reflecting Syracuse University’s longstanding emphasis on this geographic region. The collection is especially strong in landscapes and portraiture, offering a visual narrative of American identity and environment, as well as significant works of American Modernism and Abstraction, featuring artists of national renown such as Albert Bierstadt, Salvador Dalí, John Frederick Kensett, Helen Frankenthaler, and Yasuo Kuniyoshi.
