  • First-Hand View: U.S. Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird, center with arms crossed, views captured North Vietnamese mortars at the South Vietnamese Army training center at Trung Lap, 35 miles northwest of Saigon, Friday. The mortars were made in China and captured during recent fighting. Laird arrived at the training camp only two hours after it has been "Vietnamized" by the withdrawal of the last U.S. combat troops. Laird is in Vietnam to study the Vietnamization program.
